Amenorrhea & Missing Periods

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your amenorrhea & missing periods.

In-person & virtual consultations available

A missing period is not just an inconvenience — it is your body telling you something important. Whether your cycles have stopped completely, become extremely infrequent, or never fully established after coming off birth control, amenorrhea is a sign of physiological dysregulation. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we investigate the root cause: hypothalamic suppression from undereating or overexercising, thyroid dysfunction, elevated prolactin, PCOS, adrenal dysfunction, or post-pill hormonal disruption. When we address the underlying driver, cycles return.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • Your period has been absent for three months or more
  • Your cycles stopped after coming off hormonal birth control
  • You have a history of undereating, overexercising, or high athletic training load
  • You have been told you have hypothalamic amenorrhea or functional hypothalamic amenorrhea
  • Your period disappeared during a period of extreme stress or significant weight change
  • You have irregular or very infrequent cycles and want to understand why
  • You are trying to conceive and need your cycle to return first

Our Approach

How We Support Amenorrhea & Missing Periods Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis Assessment

We assess FSH, LH, estradiol, prolactin, thyroid, and cortisol to identify the level at which the hormonal axis is suppressed. Hypothalamic amenorrhea (the most common type) requires a different approach than PCOS-related amenorrhea or elevated prolactin — and the treatment differs significantly.

Cycle Restoration with TCM

TCM has a rich clinical tradition for absent periods — addressing what it calls Blood deficiency, Kidney deficiency, and Qi stagnation patterns that correspond to different types of amenorrhea. Specific point protocols and herbal formulas support the return of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis signaling.

Hypothalamic Recovery Protocol

For hypothalamic amenorrhea, we build a protocol focused on energy availability — adequate caloric intake, reduced exercise intensity, stress physiology support, and targeted nutrients (zinc, B vitamins, healthy fats) that support the return of GnRH pulsatility and ovulation.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions

How long does it take for my period to return?

It depends on the cause and how long the period has been absent. Hypothalamic amenorrhea typically responds within 3 to 6 months of addressing the energy deficit and stress physiology. Post-pill amenorrhea often resolves within 3 to 4 months of targeted support.

Is it dangerous to not have a period?

Yes — prolonged amenorrhea causes estrogen deficiency, which leads to bone density loss, cardiovascular risk, and cognitive effects. It is not a benign situation to wait out. Restoring the cycle is important for long-term health, not just fertility.

I exercise a lot — could that be causing my missing period?

Yes. Hypothalamic amenorrhea is common in athletes and highly active women — even those who do not consider themselves undereating. The hypothalamus suppresses reproductive function when it perceives insufficient energy availability. Reducing training load and increasing caloric intake is often the most important intervention.
