Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. It is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States — and yet it is frequently missed or dismissed in conventional care. Managing Hashimoto's is not just about thyroid hormone levels. It requires addressing the immune dysregulation, gut health, inflammation, and lifestyle factors that are driving the attack in the first place. That is exactly what we do.
Who It's For
This may be right for you if…
- You have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's or have elevated thyroid antibodies (TPO or TgAb)
- You experience cycles of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid symptoms
- You have gut issues — bloating, constipation, or food sensitivities — alongside thyroid symptoms
- You feel like your immune system is working against you
- Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism — if you have one, it is worth investigating whether you have both
- Chronic stress and adrenal dysfunction can worsen autoimmune flares
- You want to address the root cause of the immune attack, not just replace the hormone
- You are looking for a practitioner who understands the full Hashimoto's picture
Our Approach
How We Support Hashimoto's Through Functional Medicine
We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short
Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
- You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
- Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
- Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
- You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
- You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again
You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.
Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.
Functional Medicine
We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.
At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions
Is gluten really a problem with Hashimoto's?
For many patients, yes. The protein structure of gliadin (in gluten) is similar enough to thyroid tissue that the immune system can attack both — a process called molecular mimicry. We assess this specifically rather than assuming it applies to everyone.
Will I always need thyroid medication?
Not necessarily. Some patients with Hashimoto's are able to reduce or eliminate medication as the autoimmune attack calms and thyroid function improves. Others need medication long-term. The goal is to reduce the immune burden regardless of medication status.
How do I know if my Hashimoto's is active?
Antibody levels (TPO and TgAb) are the primary measure of immune activity. Symptoms alone are not reliable — some patients have high antibodies with few symptoms, and vice versa. We track antibodies over time as a key outcome measure.
