High FSH & Luteal Phase Defect
Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your high fsh & luteal phase defect.
In-person & virtual consultations available
High FSH and luteal phase defect are two of the most common hormonal findings in women struggling with fertility — and two of the most underaddressed. High FSH signals that your brain is working harder than it should to stimulate ovulation, often indicating diminished ovarian reserve or poor egg quality. A short luteal phase means progesterone drops too soon after ovulation, making it difficult for an embryo to implant. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we use functional medicine to support ovarian function, optimize progesterone production, and address the underlying drivers — not just the numbers.
Who It's For
This may be right for you if…
- You have been told your FSH is elevated or your ovarian reserve is low
- Your luteal phase is shorter than 10 days or your progesterone is low post-ovulation
- You have experienced difficulty conceiving or recurrent early pregnancy loss
- You are in your mid-30s or 40s and concerned about egg quality or ovarian reserve
- You have been told IVF may be your only option and want to explore alternatives first
- Your cycles are irregular, short, or you notice spotting before your period begins
- You want a functional approach to optimizing your hormonal environment for conception
Our Approach
How We Support High FSH & Luteal Phase Defect Through Functional Medicine
We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short
Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
- You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
- Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
- Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
- You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
- You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again
You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.
Schedule a ConsultationWe Do Things Different Here
Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.
Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.
Functional Medicine
We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.
At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions
Can high FSH be lowered?
FSH reflects how hard your brain is working to stimulate ovulation — it is a signal, not a fixed number. When we improve ovarian function and egg quality, FSH often comes down. It is not always possible to normalize it, but improving the ovarian environment is always worthwhile.
How do I know if I have a luteal phase defect?
A luteal phase shorter than 10 days, progesterone below 10 ng/mL on day 21, or spotting that begins more than 2 days before your period are the key indicators. Cycle tracking with basal body temperature can also reveal a short post-ovulation phase.
How long does it take to improve FSH and luteal phase?
FSH and ovarian reserve markers respond slowly — typically 3 to 6 months of consistent protocol. Luteal phase length and progesterone levels often improve more quickly, within 2 to 3 cycles of targeted support.
