Histamine Intolerance

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your histamine intolerance.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Histamine intolerance is one of the most commonly missed diagnoses in functional medicine. It mimics allergies, anxiety, and digestive disorders — and most conventional practitioners never test for it. When your body cannot break down histamine efficiently, it accumulates and triggers a wide range of symptoms: flushing, headaches, hives, heart palpitations, nasal congestion, digestive upset, and mood changes. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we look at why your histamine bucket is overflowing — gut dysbiosis, DAO enzyme deficiency, estrogen dominance, methylation issues, or mast cell activation — and we address it at the root.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You react to wine, aged cheeses, fermented foods, or leftovers with flushing or headaches
  • You experience hives, itching, or skin reactions without a clear allergic trigger
  • You have nasal congestion, sneezing, or allergy-like symptoms year-round
  • You notice heart palpitations, anxiety, or dizziness after certain meals
  • You have been told you have mast cell activation syndrome or suspect MCAS
  • Your symptoms worsen around ovulation or before your period when estrogen peaks
  • You have tried elimination diets with partial relief but never found the full answer

Our Approach

How We Support Histamine Intolerance Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

DAO Enzyme & Methylation Assessment

We assess DAO enzyme activity, HNMT function, and methylation status (MTHFR) — the three primary pathways for histamine breakdown. We also evaluate gut permeability and microbiome composition, since dysbiosis is one of the most common causes of DAO deficiency.

Histamine-Calming TCM Protocol

TCM addresses histamine intolerance through the lens of Wei Qi deficiency (immune dysregulation), Damp-Heat accumulation (inflammatory histamine reactions), and Liver Qi stagnation (estrogen-histamine connection). Specific point protocols and herbal formulas reduce the histamine burden and support the body's clearance pathways.

Histamine Bucket Reduction Protocol

We build a protocol that reduces the total histamine load — low-histamine dietary guidance, DAO enzyme support, gut healing to restore DAO production, estrogen balance to reduce histamine sensitivity, and targeted nutrients (vitamin C, B6, copper) that support histamine metabolism.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions

How do I know if I have histamine intolerance vs. a food allergy?

Food allergies involve IgE-mediated immune reactions and are typically immediate and consistent. Histamine intolerance is dose-dependent and cumulative — symptoms depend on how full your "histamine bucket" is on a given day, which is why reactions can seem unpredictable.

Why do my symptoms get worse before my period?

Estrogen stimulates histamine release and inhibits DAO enzyme activity. As estrogen peaks in the luteal phase, your histamine tolerance drops significantly. This is why many women with histamine intolerance notice their worst symptoms in the week before their period.

Do I have to follow a low-histamine diet forever?

No — the goal is to restore your body's ability to break down histamine normally. As gut health improves and DAO enzyme activity is restored, most patients can significantly expand their diet. The low-histamine phase is a therapeutic tool, not a permanent lifestyle.
