Poor sleep is not just a nuisance — it is a sign that something in your physiology is dysregulated. Whether you struggle to fall asleep, wake repeatedly through the night, or rise at 3am with a racing mind, there is always a reason. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we look at the underlying drivers: cortisol patterns that are inverted, blood sugar crashes in the night, low progesterone, neurotransmitter imbalances, or a nervous system that never fully downregulates. Sleep is where your body heals — and we help you get back to it.
Who It's For
This may be right for you if…
- You struggle to fall asleep even when you are exhausted
- You wake between 1am and 4am and cannot get back to sleep
- You wake unrefreshed no matter how many hours you sleep
- Your sleep issues are tied to anxiety, overwhelm, or a nervous system that cannot wind down
- You have tried melatonin, sleep hygiene, and other remedies with limited success
- You are perimenopausal and sleep has deteriorated significantly
- You want to understand the physiological reason your sleep is broken
Our Approach
How We Support Insomnia & Sleep Disorders Through Functional Medicine
We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.
Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short
Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
- You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
- Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
- Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
- You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
- You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again
You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.
Schedule a ConsultationWe Do Things Different Here
Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.
Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.
Functional Medicine
We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.
At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions
Is it normal to wake up at 3am every night?
It is common — but it is not normal. Waking between 1am and 4am is often driven by a blood sugar crash (the liver runs out of glycogen and releases cortisol to compensate) or an inverted cortisol rhythm. Both are measurable and addressable.
Can cortisol really affect my sleep?
Absolutely. Cortisol and melatonin have an inverse relationship — when cortisol is high, melatonin is suppressed. If your cortisol does not drop in the evening, you cannot produce enough melatonin to fall or stay asleep. This is one of the most common patterns we see.
I have tried melatonin and it does not help — why?
Melatonin helps with sleep onset but does not address the underlying drivers of most insomnia. If cortisol is elevated, blood sugar is crashing, or your nervous system is dysregulated, melatonin will not fix it. We find the actual cause first.
