Low Libido

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your low libido.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Low libido is one of the most common complaints in both men and women — and one of the least discussed. It is rarely just psychological. Low testosterone, estrogen imbalance, adrenal exhaustion, thyroid dysfunction, medication side effects, chronic stress, and poor sleep all suppress sexual desire at a physiological level. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we take a root-cause approach to low libido: assessing the full hormonal picture, identifying the physiological drivers, and building a protocol that addresses the underlying cause rather than dismissing it as a normal part of aging or stress.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • Your interest in sex has declined significantly from what it used to be
  • Exhaustion and depletion are often the real reason desire disappears — adrenal fatigue is one of the most underrecognized drivers of low libido
  • You have low testosterone, hormonal imbalance, or are in perimenopause or andropause
  • You are on antidepressants, hormonal birth control, or other medications that may be contributing
  • Your libido declined after a pregnancy, significant stress, or a period of illness
  • You have been told everything is normal but you know something has changed
  • You want a physiological investigation — not just told to reduce stress and sleep more

Our Approach

How We Support Low Libido Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Full Libido Hormone Panel

We assess testosterone (free and total), estradiol, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid, and prolactin — because low libido is almost always driven by one or more of these hormones being out of range. A single low testosterone number means something different depending on what cortisol, thyroid, and estrogen are doing.

Libido-Restoring TCM Protocol

TCM addresses low libido through the lens of Kidney Yang deficiency (the pattern most associated with low desire and sexual vitality) and Liver Qi stagnation (stress-driven suppression of desire). Specific point protocols and herbal formulas support the Kidney-adrenal axis and restore the physiological foundation of desire.

Hormonal & Adrenal Restoration Protocol

We build a protocol targeting the specific physiological driver of your low libido — adrenal restoration for cortisol-driven suppression, testosterone optimization for hormonal deficiency, thyroid support for metabolic-driven low desire, and medication review for iatrogenic causes.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

What You Can Expect

Improved hormonal balance supporting desire

Common questions

Is low libido just a normal part of aging?

No. While hormones do shift with age, significant loss of desire is not inevitable. It is almost always driven by a specific physiological factor — adrenal depletion, hormonal imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, or medication side effects — that is addressable.

Can antidepressants cause low libido?

Yes — SSRIs and SNRIs are among the most common causes of low libido and sexual dysfunction. If you are on antidepressants and have noticed a change in desire, this is worth discussing with your prescribing doctor. We can support the underlying physiology while you navigate that conversation.

How long before libido improves?

It depends on the driver. Adrenal restoration takes 6 to 12 weeks. Hormonal rebalancing typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. Many patients notice improved energy and mood — which often precedes the return of desire — within the first 4 to 6 weeks.
