Metabolic Syndrome

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your metabolic syndrome.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — elevated blood sugar, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, and abdominal obesity — that significantly increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illness. Conventional medicine treats each marker separately. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we address the underlying driver: insulin resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation. When we improve insulin sensitivity, support mitochondrial function, and reduce the inflammatory burden, the individual markers often improve together — because they share a common root.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You have been told you have metabolic syndrome or pre-diabetes
  • You carry significant weight around your midsection
  • Elevated blood sugar and triglycerides are at the core of this pattern — blood sugar imbalances is often where metabolic syndrome begins
  • You have low HDL cholesterol alongside other metabolic markers
  • You have a family history of type 2 diabetes or heart disease
  • You have tried dietary changes with limited or temporary improvement
  • You want a root-cause approach to reversing metabolic dysfunction — not just managing numbers

Our Approach

How We Support Metabolic Syndrome Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

We assess fasting insulin, glucose, HbA1c, full lipid panel (including particle size), blood pressure, inflammatory markers (CRP, homocysteine), and uric acid — because metabolic syndrome requires a complete picture to understand which drivers are most active and which interventions will have the greatest impact.

Metabolic TCM Protocol

TCM addresses metabolic syndrome through the lens of Spleen Qi deficiency and Damp-Phlegm accumulation — patterns that correspond to poor glucose metabolism, fluid retention, and sluggish lipid clearance. Specific point protocols and herbal formulas support insulin sensitivity, improve metabolic function, and reduce the inflammatory burden.

Insulin Sensitivity & Inflammation Protocol

We build a protocol targeting insulin resistance as the primary driver — blood-sugar-stabilizing nutrition, berberine and magnesium for insulin sensitization, gut microbiome restoration (dysbiosis drives insulin resistance), anti-inflammatory support, and strategic exercise guidance for metabolic improvement.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

What You Can Expect

Reduced midsection weight as metabolic function improves

Common questions

Can metabolic syndrome be reversed?

Yes — metabolic syndrome is one of the most reversible chronic conditions when the root cause (insulin resistance) is addressed directly. Many patients see significant improvement in all five markers within 3 to 6 months of consistent protocol adherence.

Do I need to go on medication for metabolic syndrome?

Not necessarily. Metabolic syndrome is primarily a lifestyle and nutritional condition — and it responds powerfully to the right interventions. We work to address the root cause before medication is needed, and alongside medication if it is already prescribed.

What is the most important thing I can do for metabolic syndrome?

Address insulin resistance. Every component of metabolic syndrome — elevated blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL, high blood pressure, and abdominal obesity — improves when insulin sensitivity is restored. That is the single most impactful lever.
