Migraines & Headaches

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your migraines & headaches.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Migraines and chronic headaches are not just a pain problem — they are a neurological and physiological one. Conventional medicine offers triptans and preventive medications, but rarely asks why the migraines are happening in the first place. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we investigate the root drivers: hormonal fluctuations, blood sugar instability, magnesium deficiency, histamine intolerance, gut dysbiosis, sleep disruption, or cervical dysfunction — and we build a protocol designed to reduce frequency and severity at the source.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You experience migraines or headaches more than twice a month
  • Your migraines are tied to your menstrual cycle or hormonal fluctuations
  • You have identified food triggers but elimination has not fully resolved the problem
  • You experience aura, visual disturbances, or neurological symptoms with your migraines
  • You have been on preventive medication with limited success or unwanted side effects
  • Your headaches are worse with stress, poor sleep, or skipped meals
  • You want to understand the physiological root of your migraines — not just manage them

Our Approach

How We Support Migraines & Headaches Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Migraine Trigger Panel

We assess magnesium (deficiency is present in the majority of migraine sufferers), hormones (estrogen fluctuation is a primary trigger), blood sugar markers, inflammatory markers, and histamine metabolism — because migraines almost always have an identifiable physiological driver that standard neurology workups miss.

Migraine-Specific TCM Protocol

TCM addresses migraines through the lens of Liver Yang rising, Liver Blood deficiency, and Phlegm-Heat obstruction — patterns that correspond to different migraine presentations. Specific point protocols reduce the frequency and severity of attacks, address the underlying pattern, and provide acute relief during episodes.

Migraine Prevention Protocol

We build a protocol targeting the specific drivers of your migraines — magnesium glycinate for deficiency (one of the most evidence-based migraine interventions), blood sugar stabilization, hormonal balance for menstrual migraines, histamine reduction for food-triggered migraines, and riboflavin for mitochondrial support.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions

Why do my migraines get worse around my period?

Estrogen drops sharply in the days before menstruation — and this estrogen withdrawal is one of the most potent migraine triggers. Menstrual migraines are driven by this hormonal shift, often compounded by magnesium deficiency and prostaglandin activity. Stabilizing estrogen and optimizing magnesium is highly effective.

Is magnesium really effective for migraines?

Yes — it is one of the most evidence-based interventions for migraine prevention. Magnesium deficiency is found in the majority of migraine sufferers, and supplementation reduces frequency by 40 to 50% in clinical trials. The form and dose matter — we guide you on both.

Can food really trigger migraines?

For some patients, yes — particularly histamine-rich foods (wine, aged cheese, fermented foods), tyramine-containing foods, and artificial additives. But food triggers are often secondary to an underlying physiological vulnerability. Addressing the root makes the triggers less potent.
