Secondary Infertility

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your secondary infertility.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Secondary infertility — difficulty conceiving after a previous successful pregnancy — is more common than most people realize, and often more isolating. Because you have conceived before, it can feel like your concerns are dismissed. But your body has changed. Hormones shift, thyroid function can decline, nutrient stores get depleted, and stress physiology changes after having a child. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we take secondary infertility seriously. We run a thorough functional assessment, identify what has changed since your last pregnancy, and build a protocol designed to support conception again.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You conceived your first child without difficulty but are now struggling to conceive again
  • It has been 6 months or more of trying without success
  • Your cycles have changed since your last pregnancy — heavier, lighter, irregular, or more painful
  • You have experienced a miscarriage since your last successful pregnancy
  • You feel dismissed because you already have a child and are told to keep trying
  • You suspect your thyroid, hormones, or nutrient status may have shifted postpartum
  • You want a thorough investigation — not just reassurance that it will happen eventually

Our Approach

How We Support Secondary Infertility Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Post-Pregnancy Hormonal Assessment

We run a comprehensive panel assessing thyroid (including antibodies — postpartum thyroiditis is common and often missed), full hormone profile, AMH, and nutrient status. Pregnancy and breastfeeding deplete key nutrients significantly, and postpartum hormonal shifts can alter the fertility picture substantially.

Cycle Restoration with TCM

TCM addresses the postpartum depletion pattern — Blood and Qi deficiency that follows pregnancy and breastfeeding — with specific point protocols and herbal formulas that rebuild reserves, support the return of regular ovulation, and restore the uterine environment.

Secondary Infertility Protocol

We build a protocol based on what has changed since your last pregnancy — addressing postpartum thyroid changes, nutrient depletion, hormonal shifts, and any new cycle irregularities. We treat secondary infertility with the same thoroughness as primary infertility.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions

Why is it harder to conceive the second time?

Your body has changed. Pregnancy and breastfeeding deplete key nutrients, thyroid function can shift postpartum, hormonal patterns change, and the demands of parenting affect stress physiology and sleep. These are all addressable — but they need to be identified first.

How long should I try before seeking help?

If you are under 35, most guidelines suggest 12 months. But given that you have already conceived once and something has changed, we recommend seeking evaluation after 6 months — or sooner if you have cycle changes, thyroid symptoms, or other concerning signs.

Is secondary infertility treated differently than primary infertility?

The approach is similar but the focus shifts to identifying what has changed since your last pregnancy. Postpartum thyroid changes, nutrient depletion, and hormonal shifts are the most common new factors — and they are often highly correctable.
