Alpha-Gal Syndrome — SAAT Treatment

A specialized ear acupuncture technique that targets the immune system's overreaction to alpha-gal — helping reduce sensitivity at the source.

Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is a tick-bite-triggered allergy to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in red meat and many mammalian products. It develops after a bite from the Lone Star tick, which transmits the alpha-gal molecule into the bloodstream. Over time, the immune system becomes sensitized — triggering delayed allergic reactions hours after eating red meat, along with digestive symptoms, fatigue, hives, and in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Because symptoms appear hours after eating, AGS is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed for years. Lia treats Alpha-Gal Syndrome using SAAT — Soliman's Auricular Allergy Technique — a specialized ear acupuncture method developed by Dr. Nader Soliman, MD, that works to retrain the immune system's response to the alpha-gal allergen.

What to expect

Your visit begins with a thorough consultation. Lia will review your specific reactions in detail — documenting exactly what you are experiencing, how severe your responses are, and what triggers them. She will answer all your questions about the treatment, your condition, and what other patients have experienced. Once your allergens are identified and documented, Lia proceeds with SAAT treatment. A tiny, sterile needle is gently placed at a precise point on the ear corresponding to the alpha-gal allergen. The needle is secured and remains in place for 3 to 4 weeks, providing continuous, gentle stimulation that helps retrain your immune response. Most patients feel little to no discomfort. After placement, you go home and let the needle do its work. You return after 3 to 4 weeks for removal and re-testing to evaluate your response.

Common questions

What is SAAT and how does it work for Alpha-Gal?

SAAT (Soliman's Auricular Allergy Technique) is an ear acupuncture method developed by Dr. Nader Soliman, MD. A tiny needle is placed at a precise auricular point corresponding to the alpha-gal allergen. It stays in place for 3 to 4 weeks, delivering continuous stimulation that helps desensitize the immune system's response to that specific allergen. The goal is to reduce — and in many cases eliminate — the immune overreaction at the source.

Is there research supporting SAAT for Alpha-Gal Syndrome?

Yes. A 2021 study published in the journal Medical Acupuncture found that 96% of patients who underwent SAAT treatment for alpha-gal syndrome reported long-term remission of symptoms after completing treatment. While more research is ongoing, these results are significant for a condition that currently has no conventional cure.

Do I need to avoid certain products before or during treatment?

Lia uses stainless steel needles, which are safe for AGS patients. She will review all products used in your session to ensure they are mammalian-product-free. During the 3 to 4 weeks the needle is in place, you continue your normal AGS precautions.
