Moxibustion involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) near or on acupuncture points to generate therapeutic warmth that penetrates deeply into the tissue. It is one of the oldest and most fundamental tools in Chinese medicine, used to tonify deficient conditions, warm cold patterns, move stagnation, and support the body's healing response in ways that needles alone cannot.
What to expect
Moxa is applied using a moxa stick held near the skin, or as small cones placed on the needle handle or directly on the point. The warmth is gentle and penetrating — most patients find it deeply soothing. Lia uses high-quality moxa and works in a well-ventilated space. Moxibustion is almost always used in combination with acupuncture rather than as a standalone treatment.
Who it's for
- Cold hands and feet, poor circulation
- Fatigue and low energy (deficiency patterns)
- Digestive weakness and loose stools
- Breech baby positioning (a well-researched application)
- Menstrual pain with cold or cramping quality
Benefits
Common questions
Does moxibustion smell?
Yes — burning moxa has a distinctive herbal, smoky scent. Lia uses smokeless moxa when preferred and ensures good ventilation.
Is moxibustion safe during pregnancy?
Certain moxa applications are specifically used during pregnancy (such as for breech positioning). Lia will only use pregnancy-appropriate techniques and points.
Will I need moxibustion at every session?
Not necessarily. Lia determines whether moxa is indicated based on your presentation at each visit. It is one tool among many.
