Diminished Ovarian Reserve

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your diminished ovarian reserve.

In-person & virtual consultations available

A diagnosis of diminished ovarian reserve can feel devastating — but low AMH or high FSH does not mean conception is impossible. What it means is that your ovarian environment needs support. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we take a functional medicine approach to diminished ovarian reserve: addressing the nutritional, hormonal, and inflammatory factors that affect egg quality, supporting mitochondrial function in the follicle, and optimizing the conditions in which your remaining eggs develop. Quantity may be fixed — but quality is something we can meaningfully influence.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You have been told your AMH is low or your antral follicle count is reduced
  • Your FSH is elevated — high FSH is one of the clearest signals that your ovarian reserve needs support
  • You are in your mid-30s or 40s and concerned about your remaining fertility window
  • You have been told IVF is your best option and want to optimize your response
  • You have had a poor response to ovarian stimulation in a previous IVF cycle
  • You want to support egg quality through nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle
  • You want a practitioner who will work with you — not just tell you to move quickly

Our Approach

How We Support Diminished Ovarian Reserve Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Ovarian Reserve & Egg Quality Panel

We assess AMH, FSH, antral follicle count (via ultrasound referral), and key nutrients affecting egg quality — CoQ10 status, vitamin D, folate, and omega-3 index. We also assess thyroid function and inflammatory markers, since both significantly affect ovarian environment.

Ovarian Environment TCM Protocol

TCM addresses diminished ovarian reserve through the lens of Kidney Jing depletion — the fundamental reproductive essence that governs ovarian function. Specific herbal formulas and point protocols nourish Kidney Yin and Yang, improve ovarian blood flow, and support the mitochondrial function of developing follicles.

Egg Quality Optimization Protocol

We build a protocol targeting the 90-day egg development window — CoQ10 for mitochondrial energy production in the follicle, DHEA (where appropriate), methylfolate, vitamin D, omega-3s, and anti-inflammatory nutrition. Quantity may be fixed, but the quality of what remains is meaningfully improvable.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Better IVF response and embryo quality

Common questions

Can AMH be raised?

AMH reflects the number of remaining follicles — it is not easily raised. But AMH is not the only thing that matters. The quality of the eggs from those follicles is highly addressable, and improving egg quality significantly improves outcomes even with low AMH.

How long does egg quality improvement take?

The egg developing for your next ovulation started its journey 90 days ago. This means the most impactful window for egg quality interventions is 3 months. We recommend starting the protocol at least 3 months before an IVF cycle or natural conception attempt.

Is IVF my only option with DOR?

Not necessarily. Many women with diminished ovarian reserve conceive naturally or with minimal intervention when egg quality is optimized. IVF may ultimately be the right path, but optimizing the ovarian environment first improves outcomes regardless of the route.
