Low Egg Quality

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your low egg quality.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Egg quality is one of the most important factors in fertility — and one of the most addressable through functional medicine. Poor egg quality leads to chromosomal abnormalities, failed fertilization, poor embryo development, and early pregnancy loss. But egg quality is not fixed. In the three to four months before ovulation, the egg is actively developing — and the nutritional, hormonal, and inflammatory environment during that window has a profound impact on the quality of the egg that is released. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we build protocols designed to optimize that environment.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You have been told your egg quality is poor or your embryos have high rates of chromosomal abnormality
  • You have had recurrent early pregnancy loss
  • You are over 35 and want to proactively support egg quality
  • You have had a poor fertilization rate or poor embryo development in IVF
  • You have diminished ovarian reserve and want to make the most of what you have — diminished ovarian reserve and egg quality are deeply connected
  • You want to understand which nutrients and lifestyle factors actually affect egg quality
  • You are preparing for IVF and want to maximize your chances with a targeted protocol

Our Approach

How We Support Low Egg Quality Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Egg Quality Biomarker Panel

We assess CoQ10 status, vitamin D, omega-3 index, methylfolate, iron, and inflammatory markers — the nutrients most directly linked to mitochondrial function in the developing follicle. We also assess thyroid function and cortisol, since both significantly affect the ovarian environment.

Follicular Phase TCM Protocol

TCM supports egg quality through the lens of Kidney Jing and Blood nourishment — the fundamental reproductive essence that governs follicle development. Specific herbal formulas and point protocols improve ovarian blood flow, support mitochondrial function, and create the optimal environment for egg development during the critical 90-day window.

Egg Quality Optimization Protocol

We build a targeted protocol for the 90-day egg development window: CoQ10 (ubiquinol form, 400-600mg) for mitochondrial energy, DHEA where appropriate, methylfolate, vitamin D optimization, omega-3s for anti-inflammatory support, and melatonin for antioxidant protection of the follicle.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

What You Can Expect

Improved mitochondrial function in developing follicles
Better fertilization rates and embryo quality

Common questions

Can egg quality really be improved?

Yes — within the 90-day window before ovulation, the egg is actively developing and highly responsive to the nutritional and hormonal environment. CoQ10, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory support have documented effects on egg quality and IVF outcomes.

How much CoQ10 should I take?

The research on egg quality uses doses of 400 to 600mg of ubiquinol (the active form) daily. Standard CoQ10 supplements are often underdosed and use the less bioavailable ubiquinone form. We guide you on the right form and dose for your specific situation.

Does age affect whether egg quality can be improved?

Age affects the baseline — older eggs have lower mitochondrial energy reserves. But the response to nutritional optimization is meaningful at any age. Women in their 40s consistently show improved IVF outcomes with targeted egg quality protocols.
