Low Testosterone

Root-cause functional medicine care — not just symptom management. Lia Laterza, LAc works with you to find what's actually driving your low testosterone.

In-person & virtual consultations available

Low testosterone affects both men and women — and its impact goes far beyond libido. Fatigue, difficulty building muscle, weight gain, mood changes, brain fog, and poor recovery are all signs that testosterone may be suboptimal. At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we take a functional medicine approach to low testosterone: investigating the root cause — adrenal dysfunction, insulin resistance, chronic stress, nutrient deficiencies, sleep disruption, or pituitary signaling issues — and building a protocol that supports your body's own testosterone production before considering replacement therapy.

Who It's For

This may be right for you if…

  • You have been told your testosterone is low or borderline
  • You experience fatigue, low motivation, difficulty building muscle, or weight gain
  • Low testosterone and low libido are closely linked — if both are present, low libido is worth addressing alongside testosterone support
  • You have poor recovery from exercise or feel like your body is not responding the way it used to
  • You are considering testosterone replacement therapy and want to explore natural options first
  • You have insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or significant abdominal weight gain
  • You want a comprehensive hormonal assessment — not just a single testosterone number

Our Approach

How We Support Low Testosterone Through Functional Medicine

We combine modern lab-based diagnostics with Traditional Chinese Medicine and personalized protocols to address the root cause — not just the symptoms.

Full Testosterone & Metabolic Panel

We assess free and total testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, DHEA-S, cortisol, fasting insulin, thyroid, and LH/FSH — because low testosterone is almost always secondary to another driver. Insulin resistance, elevated estrogen, cortisol dysregulation, and sleep disruption all suppress testosterone production.

Testosterone-Supporting TCM Protocol

TCM addresses low testosterone through the lens of Kidney Yang deficiency — the pattern that corresponds to low vitality, poor recovery, and declining sexual function. Specific point protocols and herbal formulas support the Kidney-adrenal axis, improve circulation, and restore the physiological foundation of testosterone production.

Natural Testosterone Optimization Protocol

We build a protocol targeting the specific drivers of your low testosterone — insulin sensitization, estrogen reduction through liver and gut support, zinc and vitamin D repletion, sleep optimization (testosterone is produced primarily during deep sleep), and strategic resistance exercise guidance.

Conventional medicine vs functional medicine — Muskego Acupuncture

Why Conventional Medicine Falls Short

Conventional medicine isn't designed to find the root cause.

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Your lab results are "normal", but you struggle daily with symptoms that affect your quality of life
  • You've seen multiple doctors and are no closer to getting answers or relief
  • Your physical and mental health keeps you from living life the way you want to
  • Your doctor has told you "you'll just have to live with it"
  • You're looking for an option besides prescription medications or invasive surgery
  • You're beginning to wonder if you'll ever feel like yourself again

You're not alone. Most care models focus on symptoms — not systems — and they often miss the full picture, relying on generalized protocols that don't work for everyone.

We Do Things Different Here

Most care treats the symptom. We find what's driving it.

Most practices choose one lens to look through. We use two — because your body doesn't separate its systems, and neither should your care.

Functional Medicine

We look beyond symptoms to find their root cause — testing hormones, gut health, and metabolic markers to understand what's really happening in your body. Instead of managing symptoms indefinitely, we build a personalized plan aimed at resolving the underlying imbalance.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Thousands of years of clinical observation inform how we read the body's patterns — energy, circulation, and organ systems working together. Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle practices help restore balance and support your body's own healing response.

At Muskego Acupuncture & Wellness, we combine both — modern lab-based diagnostics with time-tested Eastern medicine — because using them together consistently produces more complete, more lasting results than either approach alone.

Common questions

What is a normal testosterone level?

Reference ranges vary by lab, but total testosterone below 300 ng/dL in men is generally considered low. More importantly, free testosterone (the biologically active fraction) and symptoms matter as much as the total number. We assess the full picture.

Should I try TRT?

TRT is appropriate for some men — but it suppresses your body's own production and requires lifelong management. We work to optimize your natural testosterone production first. If TRT is ultimately the right choice, we help you make that decision with full information.

Can sleep really affect testosterone?

Significantly. The majority of testosterone is produced during deep sleep. Men who sleep less than 6 hours have testosterone levels comparable to men 10 to 15 years older. Sleep optimization is one of the most impactful and underutilized interventions for low testosterone.
